There is no doubt that prohibition causes more problems than it can ever cure. Making criminals out of people who do nothing but exercise freedom of choice will never be the answer to our social problems.
Criminals are those individuals who harm others. Murder, rape, robbery, etc. are crimes and the individuals who commit these crimes against others should be punished. American society would benefit in countless way if we were to adopt a policy of Taxation and Regulation of Marijuana for adults over 21, along the same lines as we do with alcohol. Remember the disastrous experiment of the early 20th century, Alcohol Prohibition? Prohibition still DOESN'T work, and Prohibition will never be a viable choice for controlling what substances people will decide to put into their bodies. It is difficult at best, even in the most abstract of thinking, to explain how someone who chooses to smoke marijuana instantly fits into the criminal category. Choosing to smoke marijuana doesn't mean choosing to hurt anyone. What justifies making freedom of choice a crime in a nation founded on freedom of choice? |
